Dancers are <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Alexandrova_Danilova&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\" target=\"_blank\">Alexandrova Danilova<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Serge_Lifar\" target=\"_blank\">Serge Lifar<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Balanchine\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Balanchine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">George Balanchine<\/a> is often considered to have been the first pioneer of what is now known as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neoclassical_ballet\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neoclassical_ballet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">neoclassical ballet<\/a>, a style of dance between classical ballet and today&#8217;s contemporary ballet. Tim Scholl, author of From Petipa to Balanchine, considers Balanchine&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Serge_Diaghilev\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Serge_Diaghilev\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Apollo<\/a> (1928) to be the first neoclassical ballet.<\/p>\n\n<p>It represented a return to form in response to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Serge_Diaghilev\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Serge_Diaghilev\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Serge Diaghilev&#8217;s<\/a> abstract ballets. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apollo_(ballet)\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apollo_(ballet)\">Apollo<\/a> and other works are still performed today, predominantly by the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City_Ballet\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City_Ballet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New York City Ballet<\/a>. However, other companies are able to pay a fee for performance rights to George Balanchine&#8217;s works.<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frederick_Ashton\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frederick_Ashton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Frederick Ashton<\/a> is another prominent choreographer associated with the neoclassical style. Three of his works have become standard pieces in the international repertoire: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sylvia_(ballet)\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sylvia_(ballet)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sylvia<\/a> (1952), <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Romeo_and_Juliet_(ballet)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Romeo and Juliet<\/a> (1956), and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ondine_(ballet)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ondine<\/a> (1958), the last of which was created as a vehicle to showcase <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Margot_Fonteyn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Margot Fonteyn<\/a>. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>George Balanchine is often considered to have been the first pioneer of what is now known as neoclassical ballet, a style of dance between classical ballet and today&#8217;s contemporary ballet.
